Mobility Scooter Repairs & Servicing

If you have purchased a mobility scooter it is important you realise that it does require servicing on a fairly regular basis.

While there is no requirement on the intervals between services it makes sense to have an annual checkup and service on your mobility scooter.

We suggest this simply because anybody who needs to use a mobility scooter is clearly in poor health, which is unfortunately most likely deteriorating and the last thing that they would want is to have their scooter breakdown when in use out in public.

We certainly suggest taking out some sort of breakdown cover for mobility scooters.

Many insurance policies for mobility scooters would include this as part of the overall package but you can buy separate cover.

Where Can I Get My Mobility Scooter Repaired?

This is a very good question because you can’t just take it to the local garage like you can with a car. The best solution is that there are probably a number of local mobility companies in your area who will be able to provide an element of servicing and repair.

There are also some national companies have a network of agents offering repairs to mobility scooters, one such source is RentaScoota who can be contacted by telephoning freephone 0800 328 1699.

While disability mobility scooters are generally relatively simple machines powered by electric batteries, there are a number of working parts all of which can unfortunately go wrong or wear out at the worst possible time.

Having your scooter serviced on a regular basis will potentially eliminate potential problems by identifying parts that need replacing ahead of time, this especially applies to brakes or batteries that are steadily losing their charge.

Can I Service My Mobility Scooter Myself?

If you happen to be a practical person who is good at fixing mechanical devices then you can definitely do a basic service of your mobility scooter yourself.

Mobility scooters are relatively uncomplicated machines and some basic maintenance can be done yourself. For example it is relatively simple to pump the tyres up and spray some WD-40 onto most of the movable parts such as the wheel axle and contact points on the battery.

Calling a repair company or servicing company out to visit you in your home can unfortunately be quite costly and there have been a number of horror stories concerning unscrupulous people who have preyed on the elderly and vulnerable who need their mobility scooter fixing.

If you have a service do not allow your scooter to be taken away because the company may then telephone you to say they have found further problems. At this point the easiest option is for you to say go-ahead and fix them whereas they could be making this up.

We came across a great article from Steve Wright of Fair Trade mobility scooters who explains that many scooter parts are relatively inexpensive, yet repair companies charge exorbitant amounts.

Steve’s Tips:

1. Don’t pay too much for a pair of batteries, they cost dealers on average £30 a piece.
2. When a scooter left parked up i.e. for the Winter make sure you continue to charge it up every two to three weeks.
3. Avoid interrupting the charge before the end to ensure the battery cleaning process is complete.
4. Give the batteries a good long overnight charge, even for another 4 hrs after the charge complete light shows as they will continue to trickle charge.
5. There really is no need though to charge after short distances. You can charge your scooter every time you use if you wish or simply charge it once a week after you have done a few miles.

If you get a clicking from the rear end, it sounds like it’s coming from the transaxle and some people change the gearbox, in fact it’s DRY WHEEL, take the back wheels off, remove the pins from the axle, grease the slots, say goodbye to the clicking.

Hi. I have a shoprider mobility scooter. It runs along nicely then will suddenly refuse to move forwards or backwards. It may then suddenly start working again. Any ideas what the problem might be? I am now afraid to go out on it incase I get stuck somewhere.

    Dear Sirs,
I live in South Ockendon, Essex. I have recently acquired a Shoprider Torino (with a new factory engine) but need to know who can i contact if i get a puncture or breakdown whilst i am out ?? Do i pay per callout ?? roughly how much.
how much would an annual service cost (at home ??) or is it better to have a yearly contract.
    Best regards Ron Lewis
